Taobao, as far as I can tell (outside of the review system) has no actual PM-type system like eBay. All chats are seemingly in real time instant messenger. (I think some stores may still use QQ or Weixin/WeChat, but) the stores I have seen link to an AliWangWang account.

You cannot chat with the sellers unless you download this application. The links on Taobao will not work.

Here is the home page. You are a customer, so click on the customer link (not the seller link). If you want to download the app for your phone, simply scan the QR code.
You will be brought to a page like this where you can select what platform you are downloading for. This page is about the same for Windows and Mac. First make your selection at the top.
I own a mac, so here I am at this page. Select the download（下载）button. The download should start right away. Assuming you’ve ever installed a computer program before, this part should be easy. Some portions may be in Chinese, but just click through it like a normal installation.
You can then open up the program and run it like normal.
You will log in with your Taobao username and password.
Whenever you make a Taobao purchase, it will send you an automated message regarding your purchase just to give you the info.
To contact a seller, where ever you see this icon on the website, you may click it. If it’s blue and bouncing, the seller is online. Many sellers hold normal business hours, but some are always online.
You may then be asked by your browser which application you’d like to open it with. If AliWangWang is not on the initial list, search for it and then select that.
You will then be brought back to your application in a chat-setting with the seller. You don’t have to friend the seller, but you can if you want.
